"Aberdeen" - According to Gaelic scholars
‘Aber’ and ‘da-aevin’ meaning the mouth of two rivers
Built in the late 1880’s, the Aberdeen Hotel was “Saint Paul’s finest” luxury hotel. From 1920–1926 the hotel became the Aberdeen Veterans’ Hospital, housing World War I veterans returning from Europe. Politicians looking for fine accommodations during their election campaign tours also stayed at the Aberdeen. The building sat vacant for years and was destroyed in 1944. Since 1987, the hotel site has been a park dedicated to the honor of Frank Boyd, an influential Saint Paul labor leader during the early to mid 1900s. Historically Inspired
Breaking ground in summer 2004, the Aberdeen has been thoughtfully designed and will be beautifully crafted to blend seamlessly into the surrounding historic community. The Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission unanimously supported and helped shape the plan that was created to blend modern urban living with time-tested values and integrity.
